Lovely Sunflower
Chances are that into whichever florist shop or grocery store that you walk into, the bouquets you see will likely have a sunflower within. But, what most people do not realize is that the sunflower is more than just an adornment in your fresh flower vase.
In fact the sunflower holds a prominent place in our world because of its seed. The edible portion of the sunflower seed is the kernel that we remove from the colored hull. The edible seeds come from the sunflower varieties that produce striped hulls. Eaten raw or roasted, alone or added to baked goods like bread, they aren't just tasty, the provide an excellent source of fiber and other necessary nutrients.
The oil from the sunflower seed is equally important. This is used in many pre-packaged foods and in some solid oils like margarine. The oil of the sunflower seed is produced by pressing the kernels of the black hulled seeds.
Animals also enjoy sunflower seeds. Birds and foraging animals like squirrels can have their fill of sunflower seeds in the foods that many people place outdoors to attract wildlife into their yards. The residue from the production of sunflower oil doesn't go to waste, either; it is collected and then used as livestock feed.
So, the next time you see the sunflower, remember it's not just another pretty face.
