Sunflower Greets the Sun
The sunflower earns its name from the first moment in Spring when the shoot breaks through the dirt. Its appearance tells us that the ground has been warmed by the sun enough so that all plants can begin their seasonal work; the sun has returned from its winter doldrums and is ready to offer its gifts to the Earth.
Throughout Spring and well into the Summer the sunflower will strive upward and point to the sky, again reminding us of the source of all good things. And when it begins to develop its large round blossom, it again earns its name, as it both strives to always face the sun and shows us a round, bright face which reminds us of the sun.
After a long summer of amazing us with its ambitious growth and its generous nature, feeding the birds and squirrels with its tasty seed, the sunflower is ready to tumble over, reminding us that Autumn is on its way. Winter is not far behind, with its short days of low clouds and diminished sun.
