American Flag

There is a reason why the flag evokes emotions in many Americans like no other symbol. Yes, an anthem has the power to stir that within us which is moved by music. Yes, the sight of an eagle in flight can best be described as majestic. Yes, flags are commonplace and mundane, displayed at motor vehicle bureaus and libraries.

But by their very nature, flags are meant to be raised, elevated into the winds, looked up to against skies both bright and dark. Flags, though anchored to the soil, though raised by human hands, take a symbol of our nation to the heavens, so that all who look at a flag in flight are challenged to compare the nation it represents to the highest ideals of the heavens.
